Ecuador is without a doubt a must-see destination for birdwatchers. Currently 1,640 distinct species of birds have been registered. At only 10 km from Quito is the cloud forest Mindo – Nambillo, considered by Birdlife International to be the most important area for birds in South America. This subtropical zone is home to over 500 species of birds, such as quetzals, caciques, toucans, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, hummingbirds, tanagers, and many others.
