In Ecuador, the east of the Andes falls into this vast, exuberant ecosystem. Locally the Amazonia is called El Oriente, as it lies on the Eastern side of the country. While the Amazonia occupies almost half of Ecuador’s territory, it is home to less than five percent of the country’s population.
Reserves and national parks are home to infinite bird and fish species. They are also home to tapirs, anacondas, boa constrictors, turtles, lizards, armadillos, bears, monkeys, and giant rodents.
The Amazon is readily accessible from any region of Ecuador either by car or by airplane. The Ecuadorian rainforest is home to nine natural reserves, including the two largest mainland protected areas, Yasuni National Park and the Cuyabeno Reserve.
